When one begins to think about it… The history of Lake of the Woods is quite interesting.
The land now known as Lake of the Woods County was created when forces of erosion wore down a rocky chain of mountains. Outcroppings of these rocks form the many islands of Lake of the Woods, 14,522 islands to be exact. The rugged rock and lake terrain that remains today is known as the Canadian Shield, which ends in Lake of the Woods. The rocks that form this shield are among the oldest on earth.
When the glaciers over Minnesota withdrew many years ago, a lake known as Glacial Lake Agassiz formed. Eventually, this lake shrank drastically, forming what we know today as Lake of the Woods. The waters of Lake of the Woods, like those of Lake Agassiz, flow north and empty into the Hudson Bay.
